Updated How we research
Yak Gear Hatch and Storage Bag Kit, 4-Inch
Yak Gear's hatch and storage bag kit, 4-Inch, a small hatch with a bag for adding reachable storage to a kayak.
TOTMOX Deck Plate Hatch Cover Kit 8 Inch with Red Storage Bag for Fishing Kayak Boating
TOTMOX's 8 Inch deck plate hatch cover kit with a red storage bag, aimed at fishing kayak and boating setups.
Hatch bags are the storage layer inside a sea kayak, shaped to slide past a narrow opening and fill the tapered ends of the hull. Loose gear in a hatch shifts, rattles and soaks, while bagged gear stacks and stays dry. The main variables are shape, since a tapered bag uses bow and stern volume far better, plus fabric weight, closure type and whether the bag has a grab handle you can actually reach. We weighed how well each bag matched real hatch openings, waterproofness once packed and pressed against a bulkhead, abrasion from sliding in and out, and how easy it is to retrieve when full. Weekend tourers do fine with a few mid-size tapered bags. Expedition paddlers should pick heavier fabric and color-code by category. If your hatch cover leaks, a good bag buys time but is not a fix.
