Your phone is the camera, map and backup communication on most paddling days, and it dies fast in salt water. Cases split into two families: soft pouches that seal with a clamp and hang on a lanyard, and hard shell cases that mount to a deck or rail. What varies is touchscreen response through the material, camera clarity, whether the case floats, and how well it survives repeated dunking rather than one splash. We weighed seal reliability, screen and camera usability while wet, floatation, and how each case attaches so it cannot slide overboard. Casual paddlers who mainly want splash protection can use a pouch on a neck cord. Kayak anglers who navigate and film should look at a rigid mounted case. Whatever you choose, test it empty in a sink first, and never rely on a phone as your only signal.
