Your paddle is the part of the kit you hold for every second of every trip, and you lift it thousands of times an hour. A paddle that is the wrong length, too heavy, or badly shaped for your style creates fatigue and sore shoulders in a way that no amount of fitness fixes. Getting the size right is not complicated once you know what drives it.

Two variables set the length: how wide your kayak is and how tall you sit. A wide boat forces the blade further from the hull, which needs a longer shaft. A tall paddler with a long torso sits higher and also needs more length. As a rough starting point, a recreational kayak around 75 to 80 centimetres wide usually calls for a paddle in the 220 to 240 centimetre range, while a narrower touring kayak around 55 to 60 centimetres wide typically works with 210 to 220 centimetres. Sit-on-tops and fishing kayaks, which sit you higher and wider, often need 240 centimetres or more.

Use those numbers as a starting point, then adjust for your stroke style. A high-angle stroke keeps the shaft steep and the blade close to the hull, generating power for acceleration and shorter fast paddling. High-angle paddlers want a shorter shaft with a wider, shorter blade. A low-angle stroke keeps the shaft closer to horizontal and is relaxed and efficient for long distances. Low-angle paddlers want a longer shaft with a narrower, longer blade. Most recreational and touring paddlers are naturally low-angle, so if you are not sure, size toward the longer end and pick a narrower blade.

If you can test in person, sit in your kayak on land or at a dock and hold the paddle overhead with your hands on the shaft and your elbows bent at roughly ninety degrees. Your hands should sit a comfortable distance in from the blades, leaving a hand or two of shaft showing on each side. When you take a stroke on the water, the blade should submerge fully without the shaft going deep, and your top hand should stay around chin to eye level for a high-angle stroke or shoulder level for a low-angle one.

Weight matters more than almost any other spec. An aluminium shaft with plastic blades might weigh over a kilogram, while a carbon shaft with composite blades can be well under 800 grams. That difference is small in your hand and enormous over three hours. If you are choosing between spending on the boat or the paddle, a lighter paddle usually improves the day more. Fibreglass shafts with nylon blades are a sensible middle ground that most paddlers are happy with long term.

A few smaller details are worth understanding. Feather is the angle between the two blades, and modern two-piece paddles let you set it anywhere from zero to sixty degrees. Feathering reduces wind resistance on the recovering blade and can ease wrist strain, but plenty of paddlers use zero feather happily. Try fifteen to thirty degrees and see what feels natural. Small-diameter shafts suit smaller hands and reduce grip fatigue. A bent or ergonomic shaft can help paddlers with wrist issues, at a higher price.

Whatever you choose, buy or make a paddle leash decision consciously, and carry a spare paddle on any trip where losing yours would be a serious problem. A cheap four-piece spare stowed on the deck costs little and turns a trip-ending failure into an inconvenience. Rinse the ferrule with fresh water after salt paddling so the two halves keep coming apart when you need them to.
