Paddle length
The overall length of a kayak paddle, sized mainly by your height and the width of the kayak you are paddling.
Paddle length is the overall length of a kayak paddle, measured in centimeters, and it is one of the first specs a new paddler has to choose. The right length depends mainly on two things: your torso height and the width of the kayak you paddle, since a wider hull puts more horizontal distance between your hands and the water, requiring a longer paddle to reach a comfortable stroke angle.
A paddle that is too long forces a wide, high stroke that tires the shoulders quickly and can encourage inefficient technique, while a paddle that is too short forces you to lean or reach awkwardly to keep the blade fully buried. Paddlers who move between a wide recreational sit-on-top and a narrower touring kayak often need two different paddle lengths rather than one paddle for everything.
Sizing charts and calculators use height and boat width to suggest a starting length, which is a useful baseline, but trying a paddle on the water, or at least sitting in the kayak with the paddle in hand, is the best way to confirm the fit before buying. A common mistake is sizing a paddle only to the paddler's height and ignoring boat width entirely, which can leave the recommendation off by several centimeters.
