Sun does more damage to a stored kayak than water ever will. Plastic chalks and gets brittle, gelcoat fades, and bungees and seat fabric go first. A full cover buys years of outdoor storage, and in winter it keeps snow load and grit off the deck. Covers differ in fabric weight, whether the coating actually blocks UV or just repels rain, and how they attach so wind does not work them loose. We weighed fabric durability against a full season outdoors, venting that lets moisture escape instead of trapping it against the hull, and whether the hem and straps hold in gusts. Lighter covers suit indoor or shaded storage where dust is the main problem. Heavy coated covers suit boats parked outside year round. If you tow or roof-carry with the cover on, confirm the maker rates it for travel speeds.
