How to Stop Your Kayak Zigzagging

Many new paddlers find their kayak swings left and right with every stroke, forcing constant corrections and making even short trips tiring. Some of this comes from kayak design, since short recreational kayaks turn easily and track poorly by nature. Most zigzagging, though, is caused by stroke technique, uneven weight or wind. A few changes help almost any kayak travel straighter.
Why kayaks zigzag
Every forward stroke on one side pushes the bow slightly toward the other side. If strokes are long, wide and pulled far past the hip, that turning effect becomes stronger, so the kayak swings back and forth as you alternate sides.
Short, wide recreational kayaks and inflatables are designed to be stable and manoeuvrable, which also makes them less inclined to hold a straight line. Longer touring kayaks with a defined keel line track much better but turn less easily.
Refine your forward stroke
Plant the paddle blade near your feet and pull it back only to your hip, then lift it out. Letting the blade travel far behind you acts like a rudder and turns the kayak.
Keep strokes close to the side of the kayak rather than sweeping wide, and rotate your torso rather than pulling only with your arms. Consistent stroke length and power on both sides keep the kayak balanced.
Look ahead and make small corrections
Choose a fixed point on the shore ahead and keep the bow aligned with it. Watching the bow instead of the horizon makes it harder to notice drift until it becomes a large turn.
When the bow drifts, correct with a slightly stronger stroke on the opposite side rather than several hard sweep strokes. Early, gentle corrections keep momentum.
Balance trim and weight
A kayak loaded heavily at the back or front changes how it tracks. Distribute gear evenly and adjust seat position if possible so the kayak sits level in the water.
Uneven weight side to side also causes turning. Pack heavy items low and centred.
Use a skeg or tracking fin
Many kayaks have a skeg or rudder, and inflatable kayaks often include removable tracking fins. Deploying a skeg or installing a fin significantly improves straight-line travel, especially in wind.
Raise skegs in shallow water to avoid damage. Rudders are controlled with foot pedals and help steer in wind and currents.
Account for wind and current
Crosswinds push the kayak and can make the bow or stern swing. Adjust paddling angle, use a skeg and plan routes that reduce long exposure to side winds.
