Hull material

The material a kayak's hull is built from, commonly rotomolded polyethylene, composite layup, or inflatable fabric.

Hull material refers to what a kayak's body is actually built from, and it drives much of the boat's weight, price, durability, and handling. Rotomolded polyethylene is the most common material for recreational and entry-level kayaks: it is affordable and highly resistant to impact damage from rocks and dragging, but it is heavier than other options and can deform slightly if left loaded on a roof rack or in direct sun for long periods.

Composite hulls, built from layered fiberglass, Kevlar, or carbon fiber, are considerably lighter and stiffer than polyethylene, which improves speed and glide, but they cost more and are more easily damaged by a hard impact against a rock, since the material cracks rather than dents. Inflatable and folding kayaks use coated fabric hulls, sometimes with a rigid or semi-rigid frame, trading some paddling performance and puncture resistance for a hull that packs down small enough to store in a closet or apartment.

There is no single best hull material, since the right choice depends on how and where a kayak will be used, transported, and stored. A common mistake is choosing a lightweight composite hull for rocky, shallow rivers where impact resistance matters more than weight, or the reverse, buying a heavy polyethylene touring boat for long, hilly portages where every pound matters.
