Displacement vs planing hull

Two basic kayak hull shapes: rounded displacement hulls that glide efficiently, and flatter planing hulls built to turn.

A displacement hull has a rounded or V-shaped cross-section that pushes water aside smoothly as it moves, which lets the kayak glide efficiently and hold speed with less paddling effort. This shape is standard on touring and sea kayaks, where covering distance efficiently matters more than sharp maneuvering, and it typically feels slightly less stable sitting flat on calm water than a wider, flatter hull.

A planing hull has a flatter, wider bottom that rides more on top of the water than through it, which gives it strong flat-water stability and quick turning, at the cost of top-end speed and glide compared to a displacement shape. Recreational kayaks, fishing kayaks, and many whitewater boats use planing or semi-planing hulls because that stability and maneuverability suit how they are actually paddled, often close to shore, on calm water, or in fast-moving current.

Some kayaks blend the two, using a rounded displacement-style hull shape through the middle with flatter sections near the bow and stern, aiming for a balance of glide and stability. When comparing kayaks for a specific use, thinking about whether the trip calls for covering distance efficiently or turning and stability close to shore is a more useful starting point than hull shape terminology alone.
