Secondary stability
How stable a kayak feels once it is leaned onto its side, which matters most in waves, wind, and moving water.
Secondary stability describes how a kayak resists tipping once it is already leaned over onto its edge, as opposed to primary stability, which is about sitting flat. A hull with good secondary stability firms up and holds steady as it is leaned, giving the paddler a stable platform to brace against, while a hull with weak secondary stability keeps tipping progressively once it passes its comfortable, flat-water feel.
This matters most once you leave calm, flat water. In waves, wakes, or a current, a kayak is constantly rocked off level, and it is secondary stability, not primary stability, that determines how the boat behaves in that moment and how much confidence the paddler has leaning into a turn or a brace. Rounder, narrower hulls, and many touring and whitewater designs, are built to trade away some flat-water primary stability for stronger secondary stability, since that suits how they are actually used.
Paddlers moving from a wide, flat recreational boat to a narrower touring or whitewater hull often find the new boat feels tippier at first, purely because it has less primary stability, even though its secondary stability may be just as good or better once leaned. Edging a kayak deliberately, leaning it onto its hull rather than staying bolt upright, is a core skill for using secondary stability to turn efficiently and stay controlled in rougher water.
